Where has the time gone?

If you're wondering what I've been up to....

sunny

2 months - what can happen in 2 months?

  • I move to one of the most beautiful places on the planet
  • on arrival I still have no housing or contact with the university
  • get a whirlwind tour of my assignment form the embassy staff which includes a night of thai food and premium Guatemalan rum hosted by a guy who played Kevin Bacon's double(I couldn't make that up)
  • I'm informed that my very knowledgeable embassy contact is leaving and going to Quito in May
  • One of the sites for the new English programs is a small town on the lake that is populated by a very poor indigenous community and a very weird hippy community. I've been some weird places and this is WEIRD. I'm frightened by a guy who is meditating in the dark outside of a bar.
  • I ask the director of the school to have a meeting with the teachers and that turns into a power point presentation by myself.
  • I find an awesome apartment with a nice family. The Fulbrighter moved in upstairs. The local Episcopalian church has revivals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sometimes on Fridays or maybe Sundays. Pretty much every night.
  • The director of the school informs us that she is getting married and leaving the school in February.
  • The Fulbrighter gets mugged. She shows up on my doorstep at 1am.
  • The neighborhood has a rooster, a turkey, and 25 thousand dogs. They take turns to make sure that the street is never quiet. They, interestingly enough, respect the Episcapalion services.
  • The new director of the Language Center of the University(the teachers' immediate boss+ my primary colleague) is, apparently, crazy.
  • He harasses the Fulbrighter and the most competent person on the staff, Gloria, writes an insane letter to the Embassy staff which ends in "Yes, We Can!" and is promptly fired.
  • He takes with him the key to the language office. We have no place to work.
  • I had promised the interim director of the school that if they fired him I would take on some of his duties.
  • I now have two jobs.
  • I take an American public school bus that has been painted red or green to work everyday. It is the public transportation in the area. My niece is concerned that they let people jump on the bus while it's running. She also doesn't understand why the emergency alarm doesn't go off when we jump out the back of the bus upon arrival.
  • I go on some beautiful hikes with a new friend who has written a book based on the accounts of people in his community about their family members who "disappeared" during the time of "la violencia" here. He offers to give a talk at my school.
  • I'm really happy to be here.
